Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I come to CompCon?
Good question! CompCon’s not your ordinary conference - we’re run by students, for students. You’ll get the opportunity to explore some areas of computer science that you don’t cover in the curriculum, with talks about leading-edge research and workshops introducing you to new programming languages and other interesting technical concepts. Our talks won’t be lightweight!
You’ll also get to meet other computing students from around Australia - you might even meet the team for founding the next big startup or open source project, who knows? To top it off, there will be plenty of interesting social events!
And if you’re looking for a job, look no further - we’ll have a Careers Fair with reps from several major companies. You’ll also get the chance to network with reps from our sponsors.
At CompCon 2013, you’ll get:
- Talks by industry professionals, academics and researchers
- Hands-on technology workshops
- Social events
- Hacking sessions
- Careers fair, featuring some of Australia’s leading employers
- Conference dinner
...and more!
In short - you should come!

I really want to come, but I don’t know if I can afford it!
We’re aware that many students have limited budgets, and we want to make sure that money doesn’t stop you from coming to CompCon!
If you're outside Canberra, you can apply for our Travel Scholarships Program. Thanks to our sponsors, we are able to provide a limited amount of financial support to students who need it.
If your university has a computing students’ association, they might also be able to help as well. You may also be able to get assistance from your university’s Student Union or Student Association. Many student organisations have grant schemes or extracurricular activity funds that can help students who wish to attend conferences. If you need any help with this, please contact us and we should be able to give you a hand!
What are the accommodation options?
Accommodation details are available on the Accommodation page.
I’m involved with my local computing students’ association. How can we help?
The easiest way you can help is to advertise CompCon to students at your university. We’d really appreciate it if you could talk to your members, as local advertising and word-of-mouth is a very effective way of marketing! Please contact us to obtain promotional material.
Another way you can help is by assisting students who want to attend CompCon. Many universities have grants available through their student unions or student associations to help cover the cost of conference travel. Talk to us if you’re interested in this.
You should also come to the conference! One of our aims in establishing CompCon is to help improve the standard of computing clubs and societies by linking up people from all over the country. At CompCon, you’ll be able to exchange ideas with execs from several other clubs and societies, which can help you improve things at your university!
I have special accessibility needs. Will I be okay at CompCon?
We aim to provide an inclusive environment at CompCon - please contact us and we’ll make sure appropriate arrangements are made.
I’m interested in speaking at CompCon!

Can I speak at CompCon if I’m just a student?
Absolutely! We strongly encourage students to submit a talk or workshop proposal - especially Honours and PhD students, but even if you’re just an undergrad with an interesting project to talk about, we’d like to hear it! Presenting at CompCon will help you build your public speaking experience, and give you the opportunity to present your work to others.
Please take a look at the Call for Proposals page for more information.
